MEETING: Fri Sep 8, 2006

Austin Adobe User Group: 1:15-4:00 pm

TOPIC: Dreaweaver and Web Databases

PRESENTERS: Lindsey Allen and Linda Lange

[A Word From Lindsey]
A few months ago, Linda Lange and I (Lindsey Allen) were in a 3-way email exchange with our fearless leader, Sue Tedford. Sue, as usual,
hit us up to do a presentation - in September - on Dreamweaver - oh,
yeah, and create a Web database.

Linda and I both agreed that this would be a useful topic for us to pursue since we were already involved in teaching ourselves how to create Web databases. We were using PHP and MySQL, the open source (free) software so prevalently used by many web database developers. So, since September was sooooo far away, we agreed.

But contrary to our usual behavior, we decided to get started in June in preparing for the September presentation. I spent a few dollars on designer coffee while occupying one of the nice cushiony chairs at Borders looking at all the available books on Dreamweaver and PHP/MySQL - both of them. Making a selection at that point was too difficult, so
I bought both books, took them home and began to apply what I was reading to the real world.

It soon became obvious that "PHP for Dreamweaver 8" was head and shoulders over the other book so Linda and I began a series of weekly 4-hour 2-person workshops. We decided to go beyond the bounds of the book and apply what we had learned to some of our clients' web pages. So, during our presentation we will cover the basics of creating and applying a web-based database - to include creating the basic administrative pages for displaying,
adding, modifying, connecting, and deleting records. If you intend to create a database with these tools and/or you would like to more thoroughly follow our presentation, we strongly suggest that you buy this book ahead of time.

"Foundation PHP for Dreamweaver 8", David Powers, ISBN 1-59059-569-6, $39.99 MSRP or $26.39 from: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1590595696/ref=sr_11_1/104-4236708-7283135?ie=UTF8

The Austin Adobe User Group (AMMUG) meets monthly to help network, educate and support web/e-learning developers using Adobe products in government as well as the Austin community. Topics range from formal presentations on Dreamweaver, Flash, Captivate or Authorware, as well as general topics on best practices in creating e-learning, web accessibility issues, storyboarding projects and demonstrating agency developed products. All meetings are free and it's a great way to network with other developers and share resources.

» See you soon!

The next few weeks are going to go by very quickly and very slowly at the same time... we'd jump up and down in excitement, but that makes it too hard to type. We're so glad that you will be joining us!
